Tsugaike Nature Park is forecast to enter its best-color period around October 6, while Iwatake's Mountain Harbor is forecast for October 22. That is a 16-day gap within the same mountain holiday area. There is no single date when all of Hakuba turns red.
We are the staff at Shiroumaso, a ryokan in Hakuba. This guide compares the early 2026 autumn foliage forecast with the places you actually plan to visit: a high mountain trail, a gondola viewpoint or a walk in the village.
Forecast checked September 15, 2026. These dates are estimates, not guaranteed peak days. The photographs illustrate the locations; they are not live reports of 2026 foliage.
The 2026 forecast: compare the destination, not just “Hakuba”
Weathernews' September 3 outlook expects autumn colors to arrive later than usual in many parts of Japan because of warmer autumn conditions. Its individual destination pages give the following outlook for the Hakuba area.
| Destination | Best-color period forecast to begin | Leaf fall forecast to begin | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tsugaike Nature Park | Around October 6 | Around October 18 | Weathernews |
| Happo-one: Happo Pond and Nature Study Trail | Around October 8 | Around October 25 | Weathernews |
| Hakuba Goryu Alps-daira | Around October 12 | Around October 16 | Weathernews |
| Iwatake: Hakuba Mountain Harbor | Around October 22 | Around November 10 | Weathernews |
“Leaf fall begins” does not mean that all the leaves disappear that day. Equally, a destination-wide forecast does not promise that every part of its trail will look its best at the same time. Follow the source links before fixing your mountain day.
Japan Meteorological Corporation's September 2 forecast also points to normal-to-later timing nationally. Its Nagano city maple forecast is for November 21; that is not a forecast for Hakuba's mountains. Its altitude-based mountain model assumes maple trees, so it should not be read as a direct observation of alpine grasses or every tree species.
Why the mountains change at different times
Tsugaike: the nature park and the gondola slopes
Tsugaike Nature Park sits at roughly 1,900 metres. The resort's autumn guide describes a usual peak around late September to early October. This is a seasonal reference, separate from the 2026 estimate above. Trees beside the lower gondola route can be at a different stage from the park's wetlands.

Happo: distinguish the pond from the lower trail
Happo Pond is at 2,060 metres. A local guide on Nagano's official tourism site describes different viewing periods around the pond and along the gondola below. The October 8 forecast covers Happo-one's named destination; it is not a precise peak forecast for the pond alone. Check recent photographs of the section you intend to walk.

Goryu: Alps-daira is not the summit of Kotoomi
Goryu's botanical garden is at 1,515 metres, while Mount Kotoomi reaches 2,007 metres. The October 12 estimate is for Alps-daira, not the whole climb. If you plan to hike higher, look for a report naming that higher section. The village's usual autumn guide places Goryu's broader season between late September and mid-October.
Iwatake: the leaves around you and the mountains across the valley
Iwatake combines woodland with views toward the Northern Alps. Its official FAQ gives late October to early November as a usual foliage period. Keep two views separate: the trees around Mountain Harbor and the higher slopes you see from the terrace. They need not change together.

Which area should you consider for your travel dates?
Use this as a shortlist based on the current forecast, then choose with recent local reports. It is not an additional forecast.
| Your visit | First places to check | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Late September | Upper Tsugaike and Happo | These dates precede the current best-color estimates; look for early color reports rather than assuming a peak |
| Early October | Tsugaike Nature Park and Happo-one | The exact trail section, recent images and mountain weather |
| Mid-October | Goryu Alps-daira and lower sections of Happo | Whether upper foliage is already fading; lift availability |
| Late October | Iwatake and village walks | Local woodland conditions and which mountain facilities remain open |
| Early November | Iwatake and lower viewpoints | Fresh reports first: the forecast does not guarantee colors through the whole month |
At village level, Hakuba's official guide lists mid-to-late October as the usual period for Oide Park and Hakuba Bridge. This is not a confirmed 2026 forecast. These viewpoints are also useful for looking toward the mountains when you prefer a shorter outing.

Plan a flexible mountain day and a village evening
Check lift dates as well as leaves
The operator's 2026 season announcement lists Happo until November 3, Tsugaike until October 25 and Iwatake until November 15; Iwatake is gondola-only on November 9–15. Goryu's official site lists its green season until October 18. These are operating plans, not foliage end dates, and weather can affect access.
Before leaving, check the named viewpoint's latest foliage report, mountain forecast and lift status. Bring a warm layer, a windproof outer layer and footwear suited to your route. A village forecast alone is not enough for a high mountain walk; our Hakuba weather guide helps with seasonal planning.
Return to Shiroumaso after the mountains
Keep some room in your itinerary to change the next day's viewpoint. Shiroumaso offers a ryokan base in Hakuba for a trip combining mountain outings and onsen. Frequently asked questions
When is the best time for Hakuba autumn foliage in 2026?
The September 15 forecast check shows best-color periods beginning around October 6 at Tsugaike, October 8 at Happo-one, October 12 at Goryu Alps-daira and October 22 at Iwatake Mountain Harbor. Choose a destination as well as a date; these are estimates, not guaranteed peak days.
Does Happo's forecast apply exactly to Happo Pond?
No. The forecast names Happo Pond and the Nature Study Trail together. The pond and lower slopes are at different elevations, so check a recent report for your intended section.
Can I see autumn colors in Hakuba in November?
Iwatake is a place to check for early November under the current forecast. Verify fresh local reports and operation dates before going. November is not one continuous peak period across Hakuba.
Can I book a particular day for three-layer autumn colors?
You can plan a visit, but the view cannot be guaranteed. Three-layer autumn colors require snow on the higher peaks, autumn leaves below and green lower slopes, with enough visibility to see them together.
How should I use an early forecast?
Use it to shortlist areas and keep your mountain day flexible. Recheck destination forecasts, recent local photographs and lift operations near your trip. A report's observation date and a forecast's issue date are different things.
