Written by: The Shiroumaso Team — a ryokan that has been welcoming guests in Hakuba for over 50 years

"Planning to visit Hakuba during green season but overwhelmed by hotel choices?" If you're looking for Hakuba accommodation between April and November, we'll share the single most important tip that no other website talks about.

As ryokan owners who have lived in Hakuba for over 50 years, we'll tell you straight: the most important factor when choosing accommodation in Hakuba is whether it's close to a free shuttle bus stop.

Why? Because Hakuba is huge. Gondolas and scenic spots are spread across 15 km, and getting around Hakuba depends almost entirely on the free shuttle bus system. If your hotel is far from a bus stop, you'll waste precious sightseeing time walking to catch a ride every morning.

In this article, we'll show you exactly which hotels sit right at bus stops (data from the official timetable), plus recommend a ryokan that's closest to the central bus hub — all from the perspective of locals who actually live here.

Note: This guide covers green season (Apr–Nov) — hiking, alpine sightseeing, wildflowers, and autumn foliage. For winter season accommodation (skiing/snowboarding), a separate guide is coming.

Why Choose Accommodation Near a Bus Stop?

Hakuba Is Bigger Than You Think — No Bus = No Way Around

Many travelers assume Hakuba is a small walkable village. The reality: Hakuba has gondolas and scenic spots spread across three main zones:

  • Happo-One — Happo Alpine Line with panoramic views of the Japanese Alps
  • Iwatake — Home of Mountain Harbor, Hakuba's famous scenic viewpoint + mountain biking
  • Tsugaike — Alpine nature park with world-class hiking trails and wildflowers

These three zones are about 15 km apart. Walking between them isn't an option.

So how do you get around? Let's compare:

TransportPractical?CostNotes
Free shuttle bus★★★ Most convenientFreeFor same-day gondola/lift round-trip riders only (May 30–Nov 3, 2026)
Rental car★★ FlexibleModerateRequires international license; parking available
Taxi★ ExpensiveHigh per tripMust call to reserve; limited availability
Public bus★ Very limitedPaidVery few runs per day; impractical
Walking✕ Not feasibleFree15 km between zones; not realistic

Bottom line: the free shuttle bus is the lifeline of Hakuba. That's why you should choose accommodation near a bus stop.

Three Free Shuttle Routes — Happo, Iwatake, Tsugaike

Hakuba operates three free shuttle bus routes connecting all three gondola stations:

RouteFrom → ToDuration
Happo LineHakuba Highland Hotel → Happo Bus Terminal~29–31 min
Iwatake LineHappo Bus Terminal → Iwatake Gondola~7 min
Tsugaike LineHappo Bus Terminal → Tsugaike Gondola~19 min

Buses run approximately 22 services per day, free for passengers who ride a gondola / lift / ropeway round-trip on the same day. Green season service: May 30 – November 3, 2026.

Notice that all three routes connect at "Happo Bus Terminal" — this is a critical point we'll explain soon.

So — which location on this list is the best?

Why Happo Bus Terminal Is the Best Location

Access Every Gondola from One Hub

Happo Bus Terminal is where all three free shuttle routes converge. It's essentially the "central station" of Hakuba.

If your accommodation is near Happo Bus Terminal, you can reach any gondola:

DestinationHow to Get There from Happo BTDuration
Happo GondolaWalk (no bus needed)~10 min
Iwatake GondolaIwatake shuttle bus~7 min
Tsugaike GondolaTsugaike shuttle bus~19 min

Hotels elsewhere on the Happo Line (e.g. Hakuba Highland Hotel or Hotel Oak Forest) sit on a single route. To reach Iwatake or Tsugaike, you must first ride the bus to Happo BT and transfer — adding 20–30 minutes each way.

Stay near Happo BT, and you're just a 3-minute walk to the bus hub with direct access to every gondola — saving time every single day.

Hikers and nature lovers who plan to visit different areas each day ("Happo Alpine Line today, Tsugaike Nature Trail tomorrow") benefit the most from staying near Happo BT.

Restaurants and Shops Within Walking Distance

The area around Happo Bus Terminal is also the liveliest part of Hakuba. Restaurants, izakaya, cafés, and convenience stores are all within walking distance — so even if you book a room without meals, finding dinner is never a problem.

Shinkansen + Express Bus from Nagano — Happo BT Has the Most Stops

The most popular route from Tokyo to Hakuba: take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Nagano Station (~1 hr 20 min), then catch an express bus from Nagano to Hakuba (~1 hr).

The express bus from Nagano makes several stops in Hakuba, but Happo Bus Terminal has the most frequent service because it's the transport hub of the village.

This means:

  • Step off the Nagano bus → arrive at Happo BT → walk straight to your nearby hotel, no transfer needed
  • Switch to any free shuttle bus to reach different gondolas immediately

Direct airport buses (Narita / Haneda → Hakuba) also stop at Happo BT.

Summary: Happo Bus Terminal = access to every gondola + restaurants within walking distance + the most express bus services. Stay near here and everything becomes easier.

Tips Before You Book

Is It Near a Bus Stop?

This is the most important point we've repeated throughout this article. Check whether the hotel you're considering is at a bus stop, or requires a walk to reach one. If you'd be walking more than 10 minutes every morning — reconsider.

Check the bus stop list (table above). If your hotel isn't on the list, you'll need to walk to the nearest stop.
